Who are you?
We manufacturer delicious granola using a secret family recipe.
Why Did you start your business?
Whenever Dee, my wife, went to the store to find a delicious granola, she was always dismayed over the taste and the ingredients. Surely she could make a better, tastier version to feed our family. 5 lbs of oats and a gallon of maple syrup were purchased to experiment and soon we had a delicious granola for our family and friends to enjoy. Son after we were making for local stores and soon expanded to have customers across the US.
What makes your business unique?
Our ingredients are all natural and easy to pronounce and Dee has a hand in crafting and creating, which means there is love in each bag.
What's the biggest mistake you've made with your business and what did you learn from it??
We almost gave away a large portion of our company in exchange for financial support. We opted to bootstrap, go it alone and keep control in our hands. Unless someone brings something to the table other than money...hold tight to your ownership structure.
what big goal do you have for your company and how do you plan to achieve it?
We set a goal at the beginning of GLG to have our products in all 50 states in 5 years. We are closer to this goal but not there yet. Make sure you find out how your industry works (do you have brokers, distributors....etc) and then embrace it to get your product on the shelves or name in the lights.
Guerilla marketing is key but make sure you find out the path in your industry. You might have to pay some people along the way, but in many cases it is an easier path than going it alone.
what advice or tips do you have for people wanting to start their own business or follow their dreams?
A bag of oats and a great recipe has translated into passionate customers for our product and a growing company that didn't exist 5 years ago. You might be closer than you think to starting on your path to success. Take a chance, invest your time, your talents and be prepared to work hard to achieve what you have dreamed about.
Don't be ashamed to not try. We won't tell you about the recipes that didn't work, but we never gave up and kept dreaming (and working) everyday to make GLG a success.
