Who are you?
I'm probably the only sponsor completely in the wantrepreneur camp. I aspire to start business of my own but have been unable to make the leap so far. That being the case I’d like to use this interview to put myself out there to see if it sparks any connections to help me to reach my goals. I will be documenting my efforts and sharing everything that comes of this sponsorship on my website.
Why Did you start your business?
I’ve had various side projects over the years. The most recent one is AttackandSustain.com in which I curate and post one music video per day. It’s sort of a 365 days project for me to get in the habit of seeking out and sharing something creative. It also satisfies a deep seeded need to share music I love.
What makes your business unique?
Still no business so I’ll state what others have said makes me unique. I’ve been a full stack web developer since 1999 but I have a strong interest in the arts and human behavior. Creatives and technical people have a hard time communicating effectively with each other so I often find myself as an intermediary between marketing, product, and engineering teams.
What's the biggest mistake you've made with your business and what did you learn from it??
Not starting would be the obvious answer! Another mistake I would say I’ve made in my career is chasing monetary opportunities rather than happiness. I’ve worked at a number of technology startups hoping for a big exit without success and I’ve also worked under some miserable people for longer than I should have. If you’re in a bad situation cut it as quickly as you can.
what big goal do you have for your company and how do you plan to achieve it?
My big goal would be achieving creative and financial independence through my work. I’m still working on a plan to get there. I’m on the look out for a suitable mentor as having someone that’s been there would help a ton. In lieu of that, I’m going to keep sharing, experimenting and working.
what advice or tips do you have for people wanting to start their own business or follow their dreams?
Open up to others with your desires and goals. You’ll find support will reveal itself from unexpected places. Surround yourself with others that are doing interesting work. And if you find yourself in Portland let me know, I’d love to buy you a coffee and chat about your goals and dreams. :)
