Who are you?
Flywheel is a beautifully simple WordPress hosting platform built specifically for designers. Flywheel makes it easy for designers and agencies to launch, build and manage client WordPress sites.
Why Did you start your business?
Flywheel was built to solve problems the founders themselves had. Coming from consulting backgrounds and managing hundreds of clients, we wanted to re-imagine a modern hosting service built for the creative class. It would be a service we would use.
Instead of building it for ourselves we realized we could help thousands of creative professionals that were experiencing the same problems we were.
What makes your business unique?
Flywheel is re-imagining traditional hosting. In the last five years there has been a shift in the types of people building websites. In the past it was only technologies but recently designers launch the majority of sites. Flywheel is unique in that we are the first hosting company built specifically for creatives.
Since we are targeting a unique market with a traditionally techy thing we have worked to make our brand fun. We do this by video marketing and poking fun at our own industry.
What's the biggest mistake you've made with your business and what did you learn from it??
I'm not sure if I can pin down one major mistake but there has been many small mistakes. Once in particular was a marketing idea we had to promote migrations to our platform. We planned out (what we thought were funny) videos and created a hashtag to promote the campaign with. We ran it for three weeks and no one cared. We scrapped it and moved onto the next idea.
That's the fun in business. I think the best entrepreneurs are the ones that iterate quickly and are happy to move on if an idea doesn't pan out.
what big goal do you have for your company and how do you plan to achieve it?
We would love to be a household name when agencies talk about their process. Since more and more agencies are turning to WordPress to build sites on, we have an opportunity of the years to really make an impact on this industry.
Just like a sales team might talk about Salesforce as the obvious solution, I hope designers have a similar conversation about Flywheel when talking about a new web project.
To achieve this we'll stay the course. We have a very defined vision on who we sell to and how we reach them. I think if we stay committed to our goal it is only a matter of time.
what advice or tips do you have for people wanting to start their own business or follow their dreams?
Build something you would use yourself. Businesses don't work if you aren't passionate about the problem you're solving.
