Who are you?
I am author Maddie Cochere, and Breezy Books is my publishing brand. I write the Susan Hunter Mystery series, which is lighthearted fiction centered on a fun, athletic woman who unwittingly runs into trouble wherever she goes. In my new series, Two Sisters and a Journalist, amateur private investigator Jo Ravens has a knack for stumbling upon dead bodies. Her sister and their journalist friend help to solve the murders. Both series offer entertaining, humorous, easy-breezy reading.
Why Did you start your business?
For fifteen years, I ran a home-based business selling used books. I was ready for a change. I came across Mark Coker’s Smashwords website and realized people were self-publishing everything from short stories to epic novels. I was fascinated. I dove right in, wrote my first book, and I’ve been in love with writing ever since.
What makes your business unique?
My Susan Hunter books are not your typical mystery novels, and Susan is not your typical sleuth. Often, she is simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, and things go downhill quickly. The pink covers portray exactly what you will find inside – something light, fun, and not too serious. All of the books cross genres of chick lit, mystery, romance, humor, and action to offer a fast-paced read.
What's the biggest mistake you've made with your business and what did you learn from it??
The mistake that caused the most angst was when I included a few song lyrics in my first novel. A few weeks after publishing, I found out that copyright laws prohibit the use of lyrics without permission. Those few lines could have cost me in a big way. I scrambled to remove the lyrics and republish the book. That’s the beauty of self-publishing eBooks – you can correct a mistake and republish right away.
what big goal do you have for your company and how do you plan to achieve it?
To achieve my goal of writing three books this year, I plan to park myself in my chair and write. When the weather is nice, I write outside on our deck. Although there are distractions from squirrels, traffic, and children passing by on their bicycles, I love being outdoors. It makes me happy, and being happy is beneficial when writing humor.
what advice or tips do you have for people wanting to start their own business or follow their dreams?
I would encourage someone to simply take those first steps forward. Make a start, and don’t let fear or doubt hold you back. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the process of starting a business and following my dream. My advice to aspiring authors is to have fun. Truly. Have fun writing. Laugh at your humorous moments and cry over your sad ones. I’ve read that we should write to please ourselves, and when we do, our work is more likely to be pleasing to others. I write books that would please me if I purchased them. My advice is to have fun and write the books you want to write.
