Who are you?
We're a digital agency. Our core services include web site design & development, graphic design & branding, online marketing, and printing.
Why Did you start your business?
I started Design Extensions 15 years ago as a high school student. The problem was that I needed to make some money and the answer was that I enjoyed technology and knew a little bit about the internet. Design Extensions has been run from my parents house, my dorm room, my mom's garage, an apartment, and our first home. Thankfully technology has allowed the business to grow anywhere. It started as more of a hobby than a business, but has grown year over year since then.
What makes your business unique?
We're small, but have big experience. We've survived the test of time and as a result, provide a level of comfort and reliability for our customers in an ever changing technology landscape. Our business has grown by taking care of customers and asking them to tell others about us. We've done very little marketing over the years other than just word of mouth.
What's the biggest mistake you've made with your business and what did you learn from it??
Hiring too fast. My first few official hires were rushed into and that's not wise. I knew I needed help, but didn't do a good job getting things setup well to ensure everyones success. As a result, we had a few crash and burn type moments with people that probably could have and should have been avoided with better planning on my part. Hire slow, hire smart, and don't rush to judgement.
what big goal do you have for your company and how do you plan to achieve it?
There are two primary goals I have for the business at the moment — first, to empower our team to be more successful and second, as a result, make myself obsolete. To be clear, my goal is not to be 100% free from work, but rather to not NEED to work. Developing quality recurring revenue streams will help provide for both of these goals in the long run.
what advice or tips do you have for people wanting to start their own business or follow their dreams?
Avoid debt, care about people, develop recurring revenue and find something that won't make you hate Monday. If you do these things, regardless of the business, you'll see much more success than any other path.
